M.I.T. Massachusetts Institute of Technology realized the importance of the right materials for the right job.

Unlike the illustration of Archimedes aiming a special round mirror it's more likely that Archimedes defeated a fleet of ships by using the polished metal shields of troups - far more practical and available - to focus the sun at a point on a ship, at which time it burst into flames.

One can see if Archimedes design in this solar power tower design - this is his "death ray" applied to producing steam instead of burning ships - it's excactly the same design and he could have shown us the way over 2000 years ago.

Everyday you switch on your kettle to use electricity to heat an element to boil water and make steam. This is very inefficient since the electricity has been through several conversions and travelled miles to your home and has to be turned back into heat again. Cutting down on energy conversion will save more energy.

Today the latest advanced solar technology uses the sun to heat a "long" mirror and a "long" receiver to capture as much light and heat as possible. The sun is concentrated and focussed on a long pipe with water in it - the water boils and steams come out - add some pressure - squeeze the nozzle - and the steam drives an ordinary steam engine. This is the state of the art 2008 rocket science that Archimedes would in bewilderment question why would we do it any other way... then again maybe not, maybe he would suggest...
